October Update
We are pleased to be working towards reopening the Village Hall on Sunday, 15 November 2026, subject to the remaining essential preparations being completed.
As the committee is only too aware, bringing even the basic elements of the hall up to standard has taken far more time than we ever envisaged. Our first concerns were the roof and electrics, but we subsequently found areas of non-compliance and longstanding maintenance issues that had been left wanting over many years. These have required considerable additional work.
Roof, interior and electrical installation
The major roof works are complete. We have also undertaken internal repairs, including plastering and replacement ceiling tiling, with further improvements still to follow. The full electrical inspection has produced a satisfactory outcome; a few Category C3 recommendations can be addressed progressively.
Fire safety and managed improvements
The comprehensive fire risk assessment has identified both immediate management measures and longer-term improvements, including review of fire doors and compartmentation. Before opening, escape routes must be clear, appropriate exit signs in place, the fire alarm operational, and evacuation arrangements, drills and responsible-person procedures established. Other works will be programmed in accordance with the assessor's recommendations and agreed interim precautions, rather than left unattended.
Fire Exit B - commemorative nameplate bricks
The nameplate bricks and plaques previously displayed around Fire Exit B, which leads to the car park, have been removed because they distracted attention from the fire-exit signage. We appreciate that these were donated or sponsored by members of the community over the years. The area will be made good and the exit clearly signed; we intend to find another suitable location in the village Hall where the nameplates can be displayed.
Kitchen and equipment
A full trial run of the kitchen has been carried out. Some items have already been replaced, while other electrical equipment still needs attention. We also need to address the ageing dishwasher used for dishes and cutlery, to ensure suitable hygiene and operational arrangements.
Heating and entrance doors
The oil-fired boiler is booked for servicing on 3 November, before reopening. The main entrance doors also require servicing before opening, following a considerable period without routine maintenance.
Preparing to reopen
Once the remaining finishing work is complete, the hall will be cleaned and prepared for use. We will continue checking the kitchen and other equipment and implementing the necessary safety arrangements. Any further improvements will be managed in stages, subject to safety requirements and available funds.
